Proto-Songhay (c. 0 CE – 1000 CE) is the reconstructed ancestor of the Songhay language family, with 2 descendant languages and stages on the map.

Ancestor of the Songhay languages of the middle Niger. Greenberg placed Songhay in Nilo-Saharan, but this is widely doubted and it is often treated as an independent family. The family is shallow, so the proto-language is relatively recent.
