Reconstructed ancestor of Algonquian (Bloomfield's classic reconstruction). Usually placed about 2500-3000 years ago, west of the Great Lakes. Of its branches, only Eastern Algonquian is a proven genetic subgroup; 'Plains' and 'Central' are areal groupings.
